Leave With The One That Brought You

There's an old saying that goes like, "You leave with the one that brought you." It refers to social etiquette and means that if you go to a party with a date, it's considered to be in bad taste if you leave with someone other than your date.

Apparently, that adage doesn't hold true in politics.

Ron Johnson, the dubiously-endorsed GOP candidate for US Senate, had boasted that he was with the TEA Party, and that he would bring the TEA Party with him to Washington, D.C.

It appears that not only did his date dump him, but the whole Party left Ron Johnson behind while they seek out another. From Milwaukee News Buzz:

A pair of straw polls released by Tea Party groups earlier this week serve as none-too-subtle rebukes of Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Ron Johnson, who political observers once thought would be a Tea Party favorite.

In both polls from the Wisconsin 9/12 Project, based in Madison, and the Northwoods Patriots, based near Eagle River – conducted using just their members – competing Republican candidate Dave Westlake beat Johnson 95-5 and 98-2, respectively. Clearly, Westlake is doing a better job of courting tea party groups.

The national conservative blog, www.redstate.com, analyzed the Rock River session in a massive three-part series slamming the candidate. “The vetting session with Ron Johnson ended up going so poorly for the candidate in key respects that his campaign staff put a stop to the questioning,” the blog says. On the video, after 40 minutes of questions, a staffer steps in to say this is Johnson’s last question.

In reference to the aforementioned quote on not being “reflexively anti-government,” the blog accuses Johnson of stepping “in a pile of his own poopy. And it’s going to stink him up but good for those hoping to get away from run-of-the-mill, moderate Republicans – the kind that Feingold repeatedly slaughters at the polls.”

But Ron Johnson isn't completely alone. He has the fickle James Klauser, who came to the party with another date, but then left with Johnson.

It makes one wonder if they held the whole GOP/TEA Party in a bathroom stall in the Minneapolis airport.

Zach Wisniewski has more on this massive political swingers party.

  1. I think it's actually "Dance with the one that brung you," but the meaning's the same.
